I was listening to a report yesterday on NPR about using coupons when grocery shopping (I can't seem to find the link). I personally am not a coupon clipper - actually, I do sometimes clip coupons but I always forget to take them with me to the store. I also find that many of the coupons I find are not brands I use, or products in which I'm interested. I found the latter to be true when I looked into one of the websites (www.coupons.com) recommended in the report.
I'm wondering about your experience with coupons? Is this something you suggest to people accessing food services? Do you think it would actually save our clients money if they clipped coupons regularly?

Personally, I love coupons. I use them every time I go shopping and usually save between $10 to $20 a week. It can take some time and, for me, it is worth it. But my method of shopping may be different than some. When I create my list I look at what essentials I need to have, put them on my list and then check out the ads. I shop only at two main stores so I look at their ads. If there is something that we use and it is on sale there is a good chance that I will have a coupon for it. When you put these two together you begin to get toothpaste for $.75, Shampoo for a dollar. I just bought 2 boxes of my hair color (don't tell anyone) that are usually $9 a piece for $6 for two of them - that's $3 a box, a pretty good deal. I shop to stock up on things, I don't meal plan and then go. That makes it easier to use coupns.
I am lucky, I have a good source of coupons. I have the internet and I have a free Access to the sunday paper coupons - relatives who get the paper. I also love the hunt for a good deal. It takes time to get organized to do this but you can save money.
Do I think coupons can help everyone? Yes but it takes work. Also, they are not usually available for store brands so one always needs to compare and opt for the cheaper of the two.
Keeping updated materials available for clients would be difficult but would be a help. If they shop at stores that don't have national brands then it would be a waste of time to maintain. I think that having information available for people about where they can go to get coupons would be a very good idea.
I checked out the coupon site and see a couple I want but again, I only use them to buy items already on sale.
